MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT IN HAMPSHIRE
A vibrant, mixed-use development will fill an empty, abandoned and vulnerable site, providing cinematic, commercial, social and residential facilities in high quality buildings.
The proposed changes to and restoration of the existing garage building seek to bring back some of the building’s historic character. A new 60 seat cinema auditorium will be constructed behind the showroom building. The reintroduction of a courtyard and garden space to the centre of the site will create a building configuration similar to its early 18th century layout. Inspired by the historic coaching-house model prevalent in the town, the proposed residential units are two detached houses each with three bedrooms - arranged around small courtyard gardens. The positioning of the houses to the north of the site allows for the creation of the open courtyard space as well as separation from the proposed cinema and restaurant buildings.
The proposal seeks to be sympathetic to the surrounding buildings whilst also establishing the site as a new social hub. The use of stone reflects the heritage of the area whilst the use of zinc for the roof highlights the building as a modern insertion in the town centre.
