NATIONAL RAILWAY MUSEUM COMPETITION
The proposed design sought to deliver a sustainable, low maintenance and low energy usage building. The scheme is formed of rammed-earth arched gables at either end of the building, referencing traditional railway architecture, with a lightweight roof incorporating a pattern of rooflights to maximise natural light.
The design mitigates an existing level change on the site, welcoming users to the entrance ‘platform’ from which an exhibition route leads down between locomotives and to the rest of the site. The proposal gives a presence to the museum site establishing it as a cultural cornerstone for the community.
